WHY DO WE RELAY???

Our daughter, Mary, began this team in memory of her granddad, my father-in-law who lost his battle to lung cancer in 1986. We work year round raising money for ACS in fun, unique ways and every spring we participate in our area's annual Elizabeth River Relay For Life Event held at Portsmouth City Park. This blog is to keep our team and others updated on our team's activities and events as well as to share about the American Cancer Society and all the work they do to find a cure for cancer. We hope you will stop by often and leave us a post or two .... we're always open to suggestions and ideas.

Our area's Relay For Life Marched in Memorial Day Parade!!

We had so much fun ... it gave us goosebumps everytime the crowd cheered and clapped and yaa hoo'd us when we walked by. My 7 year old grandson rode in the convertible wearing a Kids Care Program human sign and my daughter and her two boys walked/rode along. The event is just 1 1/2 weeks away ... we are gearing up now, getting things ready, but mostly we are very excited about this year's Relay For Life!!!

Our team rocks ... we are in first place in money raised fundraisers so far! We are planning so many fun things for the kids and adults at the event and our team has several fundraisers planned again this year including a couple of new ones!

The dates/times for Relay are Friday, June 5, 2009 beginning at 4:30PM through Saturday morning at 7AM .... at Portsmouth City Park ... come out, join the fun!!!!

MINI - RELAY ... BIG SUCCESS!!!!

Mary has been working on getting some elementary schools active in Relay For Life by holding mini-relays and one of our local schools came on board. Coincidentally, it was the same Elementary School she and her brothers attended as young children. She told the story to our local newspaper of collecting business sized cards that were handed out yearly during smoke-free week campaigns at Simonsdale and giving them to her grandfather "Abie" who was a smoker. She tried and tried every year to get the message to him about the dangers of smoking. It was after his diagnoses that he told her he should have listened and quit smoking ... Abie died of lung cancer in 1986 and it is in his honor Mary began this team ... and last night she along with many of the team members were back in the halls of Simonsdale Elementary holding a Mini-Relay For Life Event.
There was time for the Survivors to be honored, the Caregivers to be thanked, Luminaries to be lit in honor of those who are or have battled cancer, and for us all to come together and Hope and Fight Back for a cure. The children were the cheerleaders as survivors and caregivers walked the first lap ... then they participated in some relay games that brought awareness to them of cancer. The parents and families were very supportive of the cause some signing up as survivors themselves and some taking information on how to start a team. We cannot thank the staff enough for all the hard work and time they put into the event ... it truly was a wonderful experience for all of us that were there! THEY RAISED OVER $1400.00 FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY ... WHAT A WONDERFUL THING!!!!

LAST YEAR'S RELAY ... HOW FUN WAS THAT!!

Last year's Elizabeth River Relay For Life was such a blast. We were very busy that night with Mary being in charge of all the activities for the event and me heading up all the children's activities and our team putting in a great team effort running our campsite selling Teriyaki Chicken and non alcoholic margaritas ... we had more fun than ever! We did have one sad note about two weeks after the relay, my step dad was diagnosed with lymphoma in early June and in mid July we lost him. It was very unexpected and very hard, but it makes us more determined than ever to work harder to bring awareness and fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Another part of ACS that many may not know about is the Road to Recovery. It is a volunteer service where cancer patients are picked up and taken to receive their chemo treatments by volunteers. Mary is also involved in that and more information can be found on the ACS website for those who may like to get more information about volunteering for that.
THERE THEY ARE ... MOM "GRAM" AND BOB "GRANDAD" (we miss you Bob, but the fight is for you now too!)

CHECK OUT MY NEW BRAINSTORM PROJECTS!!!

As I start the new year working toward the Elizabeth River Relay for Life Event to be held Friday June 5, 2009 (much more about that in upcoming blog postings ... keep tuned!!) I thought how can I connect my passion of crafting with cancer awareness ... well, said me, "Since I've had so much fun creating Crazy Quilt Purses, why not expand on that and create some Cancer Awareness Purses?" So yesterday, my brain got going, the wheels started moving, and last night I put this little adorable Breast Cancer Purse together. I just LOVE it. My grandmother lost her battle to breast cancer when I was 12 years old and I miss her greatly, but on a much happier note, my mother is a 10 year survivor of breast cancer and it is in her honor that this purse was created ... love you mom!! It is listed in both my Etsy and Artfire shops in hopes of it finding the perfect home to someone who wants to bring awareness to Breast Cancer. I usually donate 5% of all my craft sales to ACS, but with the cancer awareness items, the percentage is going up and I will be donating 25% of any sales.

I also started making Colors Of Cancer Keychains and Bookbag Pulls. They can be made in any color to represent the different types of cancer. They too are listed in my Magnolia Blossom Art shops. They are quick and easy yet such a great way to bring awareness to this terrible disease, cancer.

We attended the annual kick off for our area Thursday night ... it was a BAST!! I can't believe it's been 25 years since the start of Relay For Life. In honor of the 25th anniversary, the theme for Thursday's Kick Off was Relay like it's 1985 ... and we did!! Many of us, including my daughter end myself, dressed in our very best 80's garb ... I went as a NKOTH fan ... what a hoot!!

It's exciting to see everyone getting excited about this year's Relay For Life events ... our team is busy making plans for our upcoming Tea Party, Mary is busy planning our first (that we know of) area Mini Relay at a local Elementary School, many from our team are making plans for this year's relay as several of us are committee members in charge of lining up activities and intertainment for the entire event (I will be posting specifics about upcoming activities and events) and our Relay ... Elizabeth River/Portsmouth... is having it's Kick-Off February 10th (the same night at the Mini Relay) so Eddie (my husband) will be at the Kick-Off representing our team. We are the top fundraiser and team member sign-ups so far so we get to set up a fundraiser table at the kick-off ... we will be selling cookbooks.

Exiting things going .... more later!!!!
